maps & walls

Our dining room is a space where we spend much of our time, we enjoy all our meals in it, the children like to do their homework at the table and I use it as a home office (well, I recently got a chaise lounge so I have to admit that now I'm usually in the living room with the laptop). I don't want the dining room to be too formal; I like the idea of it being a relaxing family room. Lately I've been thinking about buying a large world map for one of its bigger walls but I also like the idea of something smaller, like this size in the photo, in case I'd grow tired of it.

It also crossed my mind to simply use some of our sea charts. We have a few Icelandic ones and also some rather old ones of foreign places.

What do you guys think about maps or sea charts as wall decorations? Is it tacky or cool?

  3. I like maps too. I also posted several decorative elements with this theme. In my case, I prefer the small picture, because i get tired too easy.

  5. oh, i've always been a fan of maps in general and as decoration. they have so much character (sounds like your old sea charts do too!) and they're def educational as well as lovely :) i'd say if you can combine maps with your sea charts, that sounds pretty darn cool.

  6. oh the places you'll go... i too adore maps, all the intricate parts of them, as well as the whole... there is something about taking off on an adventure, or being cosy at home as your post encourages. very nice.

  7. I love how it can give a feeling of history and life, especially when they're old ones and that's visible. When they're not from plastic I don't think it's tacky;) I love the example you showed here!

  8. I think I would like a little space decorated with a framed map in a smaller size just as the one in the image. That is lovely inspiration for what you have in mind.

  9. We have a huge sea chart over the area on our cabin and I always loved that! A bit of a nautical theme at a cabin by the sea can't fail :)

  10. Unless the print is truly awful (or truly meant for a school room), then cool. Love the idea. And won't it just stir your wanderlust? Perfection.
