dutch harbour town & pumpkin market

Yesterday, hubby took us to the Netherlands, to a harbour town called Breskens on the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt), in the municipality of Sluis (province of Zeeland). It's marked A on the Google map and it's where the Scheldt river flows into the North Sea. (Antwerp is the largest city on the banks of the Scheldt. I think it's my duty as a citizen of
Antwerp to point that out!) Breskens was rebuilt after the World War II, when it was heavily bombed, and it thrived on fishery. Fishing is no longer the stronghold of its economy, but the town is a popular tourist attraction. The marina is full of sailing boats and yachts and there is a fish market, which was open yesterday. Across the Scheldt is the city of Vlissingen, which we visited in July; its skyline is in the top photo.

So, hubby didn't exactly take us to Paris. However, at the café/restaurant we went to I got a very good latte macchiato and there was a Paris sign on that hanger (see photo below). I guess that counts for something. wink

On our way to Breskens we spotted a pumpkin market and decided to stop there on our way back home so I could take photos. It's called De Heidebloem and is located in a small Dutch town called IJzendijke, south of Breskens, close to the Belgium borders. It was such a charming and lovely place.

All these pumpkins helped me feeling the autumn beat. I even woke up very early this morning and made spice bread (loaf) for the children to bring to school. And I put on my fingerless gloves before bicycling with the children. A pretty autumnal start of the day, eh?

Have a fine day!

  5. Is there anything better than pumpkin? I have a dinner party in a month and in addition to your biscotti (to be served with coffee post dinner), I plan to make something with pumpkin. Any suggestions?

What a wonderful day out with your family!

  10. This is what I was waiting for to feel that autumn is finally here and that I'm ready for it: the pumpkins. Besides the rusty and golden fallen leaves, a pumpkin market describes perfectly this season, one of its beauties. Beautiful photos, Lisa! I love these journeys you take all of us on. xoxo
PS: I got mail, reply tomorrow. ;)
