It's time for my third and last, for now, 'I heart Amsterdam'-post. If you haven't read the first two then you'll find them here: part 1, part 2. In this post I'm sort of all over the place, yet in the same area; we could call it walking from the car and back again. We parked the car somewhere along the Stadhouderskade street by the Singelgracht canal, not far from the Rijksmuseum (yellow street on the map; you can park there for a whole day for about 25 €). The photos in the section above are taken in and around the street Lijnbaansgracht and the last one of that section by the small canal, Spiegelgracht, marked A on the map. It's such a lovely street, like most streets are in Amsterdam.
In the photo section below you'll see the green area in the bottom-right corner of the map, except for the houseboat, that one was on the Prinsengracht canal.
The last section of photos below was taken at the end of our day. We had already covered the 9 Straatjes district where we enjoyed good food and coffee. After walking along the Singel and enjoying drinks we walked along various streets and finally took a different route to the car. We were walking on a street called Kleine Gartmanplantsoen when I saw a sign in one window that said coffee to go. I was sold! It was in a building called De Balie, which could be called a cultural centre or something like that (top-left corner on the map). We got takeaway latte at the Grand Café, a really nice place, and were on the way out when hubby spotted that poster of the film When the Raven Flies (1984). It's an Icelandic Viking classic directed by Hrafn Gunnlaugsson, called Hrafninn flýgur in Icelandic. There's no way escaping one's roots, is there? Your home country will follow you wherever you go. wink
It seems fitting to end this post with bicycles. There are plenty of those in Amsterdam, believe me! I took these from the car – love the colour of the last one.
I hope you're all enjoying a fine Sunday!

ReplyDeleteI loved this! And that bike....oh that bike. I wish there was a bicycle culture in more cities...it seems so romantic yet practical at the same time. I would add a basket to the one you photographed, to carry fresh bread and wine to my little canal view apartment.
